Wiki Basics

These instructions are for new users and those who are unfamiliar with wiki editing. Its not hard to edit a wiki page. Sometimes you just need a few pointers.

Logging In

  1. Browse to any URL on the wiki
  2. Click on the “Login” link or button
  3. Login prompt is displayed
  4. Enter your credentials and press the Login button

If you credentials are correct, you will be logged in.

Editing a Page

  1. Browse to the page you wish to edit
  2. Click on the “Edit this Page” link
  3. The main part of the page will become an edit space with a simple button bar above it.
  4. Add/change the text and press the “Preview” button to see what it looks like.
  5. When you are happy, press the “Save” button (you can describe your changes in the “edit summary” text box before hitting save).

Repeat as often as you like.

Creating New Pages

New pages are created via hyperlinks. First you create a link to a page that doesn't exist, then you click that hyperlink and finally edit the page.

  1. Begin editing any page as described above
  2. Put your cursor where you want the hyperlink to be
  3. Click the hyperlink button (the one with the chain links on it)
  4. It will create two pairs of square brackets like this:
    [[Internal Link]]
  5. Simply replace the words “Internal Link” with whatever you want your new page to be called
  6. Save the page (Now you've created a hyperlink to a page that doesn't exist)
  7. When viewing the page, click on the hyperlink
  8. The wiki will inform you that the page doesn't exist
  9. Begin editing the page, and save when you are finished

Now you have created a new page. You can do this as many times as needed. Typically, any new subject or new event qualifies for a new page. Ultimately, its up to you (the author) to find a style that works best.

Uploading Photos, Graphics, and Documents

To upload photos or graphics:

  1. Begin editing a page
  2. On the toolbar, click theicon that looks like a picture frame
  3. A new window opens. This is the Media Files dialog.
  4. Click the “Browse…” button to find a file on your disk.
  5. Optionally, enter a different name for the file
  6. Click the upload button (might be a long pause here).

At this point, the photo has been uploaded to the wiki, but it will not appear on any pages unless you put it there.

Inserting Graphics and such onto Pages

  1. Edit a document
  2. Move your cursor to the position in your document where you would like to insert a graphic (or photo or document).
  3. Click on the Media Files button (the picture frame button).
  4. The Media Files dialog will appear.
  5. Scroll to find the item you wish to insert, and click it.
  6. The Media Files dialog will close and a link to the item you clicked will be inserted into your document
  7. Preview your document with the “preview” button.
  8. Note that you can change the display size of an image by putting the dimensions after the file name, like this:

See the Syntax Guide for more details.
