Asterisk
Asterisk is a great example of a disruptive technology. It can be used in the home as a simple answering machine, or it can be made to work like a large-scale corporate PBX. It can connect to just about anything, including telco lines, other PBX's, VOIP services, and even other Asterisk boxes.
